Small Home Design Plans and Ideas for Indian Interior

Home interior design ideas for small homes in India and that too on a tight budget is one of the most common problems we are encountered with. But that doesn’t mean there ain’t any solution. So just relax and take a look at the ideas that am going to share with you all, including beautiful photos of interiors to illustrate you.

Whoa! It’s been more than 3 days that I’ve been working on this topic and now I understand why do people don’t think much and hire an interior designer to save their time. Phew…I wanted to cover each and every aspect of budget-designing and in these three days I’ve explored and thought of all practical ideas one can use for his/her small mobile home.

Though this topic is quite comprehensive and cannot be expressed in mere words, I have tried my best to give some tips and ideas on how to proceed and transform your cute little home to an inspiration for others.

Who said that only homes with large spaces can be designed? You don’t need to worry, thinking whether you can design your small home interiors or not. Of course you can design and plan for it’s interior decoration and can give a competition to others by using a master plan. Yay! Now that’s the spirit!

Can you guess what’s the master plan? Let me tell you…it’s all about “storage system”. Storage system is one of the biggest problem we face while designing small rooms. Decorating each and every corner of your small home or over doing it, is a bad idea.

Usually, in small homes we don’t have much space to walk around, so the best thing one can do is to move your sofa, couches or sitting arrangements towards the walls. Now you have much space available than you actually own.

Small Apartment Living Room & Bedroom

WOW! The above image clearly shows the settings that can be done for people who own small space. If you own an apartment with a living room, one bedroom, one kitchen and you are out of space to have a dining area, wait and watch the above image closely….am sure you will get your answer.

Hey, what if someone visits your home while you are eating? Will you run off your dining table… Well, to create some privacy to your happy “wine and dine”, you must go for room dividers which I’ve discussed below in this post. Okay, now you can finish off your lunch…

Ah…I personally like theses kind of rooms because you have less to decorate and you can chit-chat with your friends while sitting a bit closer to them. Ahem ahem…you know what I mean.

I adore this idea depicted in the image below…i.e. using bamboo woven chair/corner sofa and the table over here is just breath-taking. Love those colorful candles on the table adding warmth to the atmosphere, isn’t it?

Frankly speaking, am not too much into reading books and novels, God knows how I scored good marks…but for those who live in mobile apartments and are huge lover of books (which you always place here and there) now you have a safe place to hold your stories with a cozy bed in white.

You must be thinking why am I sharing this single bed in a room idea? Come on, there are so many bachelors living in rented flats and rooms like me and we do sleep alone. Exceptions: when our friends don’t mind sharing one bed (yes, it happens sometimes most of the time).

Though I believe, one must have some basic furniture in their bedroom, yet you can skip some of those furniture in case of a bedroom with minimum space. Take a look at this one…

Hey, by the way a small tip for you to add freshness to your house interior is: use potted plants for home. Yeah, it really works! Just like this image over here is the best example for what I actually mean.

We Indians are famous for using lots and lots of colors, whether it’s for occasions or for designing our home. Bingo! There you go, add fun colors to your home and decorate it as never before.

You can design your interior by using space-savers all over your home, be it your sofa, table-chair or any other furniture. In India,you will find most of the people living in small apartments, flats or a rented house and they sometimes overlook the designing part. Do you think that’s right?

Well, I don’t think so! Right now am living in a rented house but am very cautious when it comes to designing my home because your home reflects your oersonality. Earlier, even I ignored interior designing my small rented room resulting in embarrassment to invite my friends. But now even I wonder where are my stuffs hidden ah…not under the bed for sure.

You don’t need to be a designer to do your home but the most important thing is, you must possess ideas to organize it. For your inspiration you can refer to small room interior photos and follow the ideas you like the most.

There are certain points that needs to be considered while you design your small home, which includes:

Keep Accessories to A Minimum Yet Exclusive

Remember the last trip you went on? So, what did you shop for your home? Yeah, I know you forgot it, right….damn, you missed the chance to bring something unique for your home. Like the one over here, a Moroccan lantern.

I actually don’t believe in having costly stuffs for my home because the one you create yourself is much more exclusive, what say? That’s the reason I always get attracted towards people with creative ideas for diy.

…and what can be better than a bamboo product, hey…the box over here is handcrafted by Vidhi. She has actually inspired me to get rid of my laziness and get crafty. Yo yo girl! \m/

Out of all the exclusive decor items for our interior, using colorful cushions is my most favorite idea. I know, it’s a very common concept but if the cushions are designed by you, it will always be exclusive.

Space Savers for Storage

One of the most fundamental and neat way to decorate & design your small room is to use space saver furniture or a multipurpose furniture. For example, the image below shows sofa with a storage drawer below it. It can be used as a sofa as well as storage area to hold your books and magazines or even your shoes.

Also, you can go for beds which have multiple drawers and sections, a side table with cabinets and sliding drawers or a cupboard with several sections which will serve a great purpose for storage. There are several other furniture which will work well as a  storage system and maximize small spaces of your home.

Use floor cushions instead of bulky chairs, so that while you don’t have guests in your home you can store it back in your cupboard.

Ah, I hate it when I see shoes and flip-flops lying on the floor inside my home, making my home look hotchpotch. Phew, I keep on arranging it again and again. Thank god, I now have wonderful storage ideas of shoe racks which again gives a new and appealing look to the interior.

For homes with minimum space using every corner to store will be a perfect option but one must use it in a neat and tidy way while avoiding clutter.

A Room Divider

In case you have a spacious living room and small bedrooms like I have, the best way to design it is to use a divider in the middle of the hall/living room, which can separately be used as a small living room, a dining place or a rest area. I divided my living area by using long curtains in between. What’s your idea?

If you want to use a wooden wall for partition, or a room divider made with iron then you are on the right track. Also, you can use the stylish beaded curtains for the partition.

Use Walls for Decoration

Instead of using floors and showcases, you can use walls for decoration purpose which will save your floor area and  make your room look designer & spacious. Decorate your home with top 10 wall designs and make your stark walls look beautiful.

Decoration items can be kept to a minimum in case of small homes or if you have too small area where decoration is just not possible or may result in a messy look, in such a case you can ignore decorating it but do remember organize it for sure.

If you want to use wallpapers for your home, you can use light and bright colors to do so. In case you prefer using wallpaper with patterned or compact prints then make sure not to use too many pieces of decoration items.

The most interesting idea for designing that I would like to shout about is to use wall units instead of floor, to save maximum of your space on one hand and implementing modern design concept on the other.

Long Curtains & Mirrors to Design Your Home

Do you love to the feeling of comfort and romance when your sheer curtains blow up naturally inside your room? Ah…I love that felling. Uh..am not a romantic kind of a girl, but I like it and hence this is the best thing one can have in their home.

For me, curtains are not just meant to design or decorate one’s home, it’s more than that. Curtains surely play an important role of decorating maximum space of your home, whether you have much home decor accessories or not. Having full length curtains with unique prints can replace it all.

For window treatments, you can use long drapes or full length curtains, as it will make your walls look longer. Using  vertical linings or prints will look great on the walls or here again you can make your choice and go for plain curtains as well.

In case of cushions and pillows, you can use a lot of colorful cushions but don’t make it look cluttered. A maximum of five cushions (including small and medium cushions) will look good on a full-sized sofa.

Oh…I love this idea of using curtain rods hanging directly from the ceilings. Look at this bedroom interior with a canopy look and coziness.

Well, am sharing this idea of using full length mirror to design your living room not because everyone loves to watch themselves and try different looks, but to make your home look reflective. Using mirror is an effective way to make your home look bigger and acts as a focal point of your room as well.

Wall Colors

Are you still using those neutral & boring colors for home? Uh…come on, it’s time to get rid of the neutrals and experiment with fabulous bright colors for home.

I know, it’s quite challenging for people who are afraid to use colors like red, yellow, orange and other brighter colors but believe me it’s worth taking a risk. I am sure you will fall in love with your walls again.

Ah, even KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) offers 4 options to choose from, so why can’t you have that. For people who are not sure about going with bold colors all around them…an option for you can be to use your favorite colors to design only one side of your living room or bedroom walls. Happy?

…and here is another option for you: using dual colors! Voila!

I feel, if you are using too dark color for walls of your home, it won’t reflect light and will make your home look smaller. So, a well-suited alternative for small homes is to use either cool colors or light and bright colors like green, blue, yellow or even white color will also look stunning for designing your sweet home.

A white colored wall gives you an option to play with colorful decoration items and will definitely result in amazing outcomes.

In fact, a neutral color will also add beauty to your home only if the furniture/decor accessories used are well synchronized with the wall color.

Ceilings Designs

To make your floor look spacious, making the use of ceiling is a perfect way to go. Hangings from the ceiling like lamps, wind chimes or small potted green plants will add beauty and elegance to your small home.

Small Home Kitchen and Bathroom Design

Not everyone can afford to live in big homes but yes there is a solution to decorate your home in small budget. Interior designing small spaces is a tough task but it will surprise you, when you will finish designing your home smartly.

Doing it smartly doesn’t mean using costly interiors. Be realistic and make use of all possible space you can. For example, instead of cluttering your frying pans, spatulas on racks or slabs  you can go for hooks to hang the utensils and use the racks for storing other food items. That’s a smart one!

Hmm..and now comes the most ignorant but important room of our homes i.e. bathroom. Please people, snap off your thinking that a bathroom can’t be designed because trends have changed and more and more modern accessories are available to design your bathroom. It’s no more a mere cleaning room.

Hey hey, I am not telling you to bring in your sofas but to bring in more colors with a style to the basics. For example you can add, a colorful bathroom tiles or wall paper, a cabinet with reflective surface, plants and fragrances to your bathroom.  See, I didn’t ask for much.

God! I have been writing so lengthy posts recently. But you know what? This topic of interior designing and decoration has been quite fascinating and enjoyable for me….and I love my work. Yeah! Being a blogger has taught me the real meaning of home.

I want to end this post by saying, be yourself and love everything about your home. It’s not just a shelter where you live, it’s your personal world. So, be realistic and as I always say “keep it stylish”!
